Soul Pool — Malcolm Poole

Soul Pool -- Malcolm Poole 18:00--19:00 Sunday 16:00--17:00 Friday (repeat) I always look for tunes that are dancable, and hit a groove, even if you had not heard the track before. If you like to hear something different, then listen into my show each week. It’s sometimes “northern soul”, sometimes reggae, sometimes "modern soul" (from the '70s) or disco. Soul Pool — Malcolm Poole

My first spot behind the decks was at the “Tree Tops Club”, a former cinema (and now a Gurdwara) when the DJ at our local pub let me have a go behind the decks in return for getting him trade prices at the record shop where I worked. I took two copies of James Brown’s “Sex Machine” single, and mixed Part One into Part Two, and kept the dancers on the floor a little bit longer than they were expecting.

So playing music was in my blood from an early age, but I didn’t get the chance to do much more until the Northern Soul scene became big again, and promoters wanted more DJs for their one-hour slots. And they wanted DJs who were not playing the “same-old same-old” that you could hear on any number of “Best of Northern Soul” CDs.

I started looking for tunes on vinyl that were very dancable, and instantly “hit a groove”, even if you had not heard the track before. Even if it meant getting into trouble from some of the so-called “purists” who thought that Northern Soul stopped being produced in the mid ’70s.

In the ’80s I started getting into computing, programming a VIC 20 in BASIC, and developing my skills through the years gaining Microsoft Office Specialist certificates, and creating a program to instantly notify students when a parcel had arrived for them.

After retirement from paid work I needed something to occupy my time, and now I have the privilege of combining my love of music with my computing skills to assist in the programming of shows into the TopCat Radio schedule, and also being Sound Engineer for some of the podcasts and shows.
